Sun doesn’t set in the city
They work their ways into corners,
Out of conundrums,
Up alleys,
And down sidewalks
At midnight when the sky is dark
But the hum of activity hangs over their heads:
The hazy weight of responsibility
Sun doesn’t set on the city shores
Instead, it replicates:
Stars are scattered throughout the murky sky,
Buzzing with energy,
Lighting up the city that is trying to sleep
The city lights, too, trail golden fingers
Over the wobbly surface of dark water
The sea lets out a sigh of relief
As it hugs the pier’s salt-eaten legs
They walk slowly across the surface of the waves,
Lost in the water’s gentle sweeping:
Back and forth
Back and forth
Just as their final choice presents itself:
Back to the nightless city
Or forth, into the midnight waves
