He sits in the woods, knees drawn in,
Gaunt face drawn in a terrible grin
As he watches the kids go door to door,
Dressed in dark colors and spooky decor
The smell of candy wafts through the air,
Drawing him from his forest lair
He winds up on the rain-slick street
Ready to give them the fright they seek
But the kids brush by without screaming in fear
One adult tells him, “Nice costume, dear!”
And shoves a candy pail into his hand
Bewildered, he merely blinks and stands
But the crowd of kids pushes him forth
Drawn into their excitement and warmth,
He says, “Halloween is pretty great!”
His plans of death and destruction can wait
